Stockport Symphony Orchestra is among the finest amateur orchestras in the country and is about to present its 42nd season hosted in Stockport’s splendid town hall. The orchestra is composed of players drawn from all walks of life and bonded with a love of playing music; some have previously played professionally, some are local music teachers, but for most music is an absorbing hobby and work roles are in a completely different sphere.
This season starts with our first concert on 12th October, opening with Malcolm Arnold’s Peterloo Overture in recognition of the 200 year anniversary of the massacre marked this year across the region. Our soloists for Brahms Double Concerto are Charles Mutter violin and Nicholas Holland Cello, and then Prokofiev Symphony no 5 gives both orchestra and audience a vibrant second half.
Other highlights of the season include our festive matinee in December hosted by Blue Peter’s Lindsey Russell, and symphonic treats including Mahler 5, Stravinsky Rite of Spring, Shostakovich Lenningrad symphony, Vaughan Williams London Symphony, Sibelius 5 and Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. This seasons soloists include Peter Donohoe, piano, Martyn Jackson, violin and Yue Yu, viola, who was the winner of the second Stockport International Young Musician competition and returns to play with us next June.
